Sunday Reflections: Your weekly Insights from outside the Pulpit
Entering the Realm of Prophetic Smelling
Happy Sabbath cousin’s
We’re back with a new Sunday Reflection, and today I’m doing something different—it’s giving story time with a side of rabbit hole, so bear with me. Before we start… Grab a cup of tea, sit back and relax while we engage in a “Get To Know Me” chat.
This morning, as I was getting ready to type up this chat, I initially thought I’d continue our conversation about becoming a powerful woman. Part of that journey, after all, is staying true to who you are—what you believe, what you feel, and the essence of your being. But as I sat there, something in me shifted. The topic I’d planned to chat about felt distant compared to what was actually taking up space in my mind. In my random act of rebellion to honor myself I decided to switch from the scheduled topic to something else.
If you’re not in a spiritually inclined place in life this may be where you check yourself, respect yourself, and do what’s best for yourself.
Now entering Candice’s chat…
This week I’ve been meaning to sit down and do some research on prophetic smelling. Sounds a bit out there, right? But stay with me. It all started earlier this week, when I woke up one morning to an overwhelming fragrance—strong, familiar, and also nowhere to be found.
It was a scent that seemed to come from nowhere, and it brought back a memory from last year. I’d woken up from a vivid dream while opening my eyes, I could smell pine. The aroma lingered long enough for me to identify it before it faded away. I remember telling my best friend about it, and she began to explain something I had never heard of before: the gift of prophetic smells.
After that conversation, I promised myself I would learn more, but like many things, it got pushed to the back of my mind…. until this week.
On Tuesday morning, I woke up again, this time with the distinct scent of laundry detergent in the air. I sat up, trying to make sense of what I was smelling. I took another whiff, and it was gone—just as the pine scent from last year. I started to wonder: What does the scent of laundry detergent represent to me? Almost immediately, I heard two words in my spirit: newness and fresh.
Naturally, I went straight to Google, hoping for some form of knowledge, but I couldn’t find a single article that explained what I was experiencing. As the day went on, I found myself taking a break and strolling through Substack when I suddenly smelled something citrusy. I enjoyed a mini LOL moment before thinking- Okay, God, what are You trying to show me here?
That’s when I turned to YouTube and found a video titled, “The Spirtual Sense of Smell” After watching it, I focused my attention on the scents I’d been experiencing. Nothing came to me until this morning. Finally, I received the revelation: fruit.
God doesn’t always show up when we expect Him to, but His timing is always perfect.
In that moment, the combination of pine, laundry detergent, and citrus made sense to me. The message was clear: I was in an atmosphere containing new, fresh fruit.
Scents are mentioned all throughout the Bible, from frankincense to myrrh. Certain aromas are tied to anointing and authority. Google defines prophetic smell (holy smells) as "a specific scent that emanates from the bodies of saints." These scents can be connected to both good and bad things, aiding as premonitions for our well-being.
I don’t fully understand this gift yet, but I’m learning. As you reflect on today’s chat, I want to encourage you to— stay open to the unexpected ways God might be speaking to you—whether through a scent, a feeling, or a whisper in your spirit. Pay attention to the small things, and ask yourself: What might this mean for me right now?
I pray you welcome embracing curiosity and begin to desire understanding prophetic gifts in your life.
If you’ve encountered something similar, I’m all ears and ready to hear!
I didn’t forget! The list below is for you 🧡*In Ephesians 5:2 Christ’s love is called a”fragrant offering”. While Paul informs us that God uses us to spread the aroma of God’s knowledge in 2 Corinthians 2:14.
